World Fair Trade Day: 9 May 2009

World Fair Trade Day is a global celebration adopted in 2001 by the World Fair Trade Organization, that will bring attention to the importance of fair trade as a means to achieving global sustainable development.

Fair Trade South Africa in conjunction with other fair trade organisations hosted two events this year: a Fair Trade Cocktail at the Vineyard Hotel and a Fair Trade Exhibition at the V&A Waterfront. These events recognised the progress South Africa has made in the area of fair trade and celebrate similar achievements in countries around the world.

The theme adopted for 2009 was Big Bang.

The Fair Trade Cocktail at the Vineyard Hotel was attended by approximately 100 guests from all sectors in the business industry. Speaker: Sheryl Ozinsky.

The Fair Trade Exhibition in the Blue Shed, V&A Waterfront drew over 100 people to browse over the displays by Fair Trade organisation in South Africa. Products included food ingredients (Turqle Trading), coffee (Bean There), wine (African Terroir and Thandi), candles (Fairhills Craft), craft (African Home, Fairhills Craft and Original T-bag Designs), jewellery (African Home, Umtha), bags (Township Patterns) and rooibos tea (Heiveld).

For the lucky draw hampers, each exhibition participant sponsored items from their range and the vouchers were sponsored by Fair Trade Tourism certified institutions: Daddy Long Legs Hotel, Grootbos Nature Reserve, Bulungula Lodge, Coffee Shack Backpackers, Tswalu Kalahari Reserve and Cape Grace Hotel.
