General: FTTSA Wins Top Women Awards
Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) was honoured as the Top Gender Empowered Company: Travel Tourism and Entertainment at Topco Media's 8th Annual Top Women Awards on 23 September 2011. In addition, FTTSA was a finalist as the Top Gender Empowered Company in South Africa in 2011. Accepting the award on behalf of FTTSA, Executive Assistant, Netsai Sibanda, said "Tourism has tremendous potential to contribute towards transformation efforts in South Africa, and FTTSA has been at the forefront of this movement for the last ten years. It was great to have our efforts recognized by Top Women Awards 2011".

An esteemed judging panel including top South African businesswomen Gillian Saunders, Director at Grant Thornton, Edna Sathekga, Transformation Specialist at the South African Breweries, Dr Ruth Rabinowitz, Director at MamaEarth and Sonto Mujakachi, Internation Communications Manager at Eskom, assessed entrants across a number of categories that were formulated to recognise exceptional female professionals in all sectors of business and government, as well as companies who have instituted outstanding gender empowerment programmes.
Karla Fletcher, Associate Publisher for Topco Media, says that South African companies are recognising that strong women are fundamental to the sustainable growth of the country and as a result have shown strong support for the Awards this year.
Entries were received from top companies including Anglo American, Engen Petroleum, Women of Africa Fuels & Oils, KPMG, Mutual and Federal, PricewaterhouseCoopers, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Adams and Adams, Netcare Limited, Lowe Bull, the Johannesburg Roads Agency and many more.
The support of these companies is essential as it helps to keep the important issue of gender empowerment at the forefront of the South African business agenda and acts as a powerful motivator to other companies to raise the bar with regards to their own gender empowerment policies.
