General: Fairtrade Africa: Call For Independent Board Directors

Posted by on Sep 30, 2011 - 03:05 PM

Fairtrade Africa has been undergoing major organisational changes culminating in the creation of independent Board positions as per the new constitution. The Board of Fairtrade Africa is therefore calling for applications for independent Board Directors from individuals, preferably based in Africa with excellent knowledge and extended working experience in the field. More information can be found here.

BACKGROUND

Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella organisation representing all Fairtrade certified producers in Africa. Established in 2005, FTA is governed by an elected Board directing policy and strategy. FTA is a member of the Fairtrade International, a global network of organisations working to common standards and verification systems.

The mission of FTA is to represent African producers within the Fairtrade system and improve livelihoods in Africa by increasing access to markets on better terms of trade. FTA seeks to deliver on these objectives by supporting technical, organisational and managerial capacities of African producers. This is further facilitated by developing strategic partnerships to leverage support for producers. FTA works with relevant organisations and institutions in building support for Fairtrade and fair trade values and principles across Africa as well as bringing people, institutions and governments together in a movement for change in trade practices.

Fairtrade Africa operates in four (4) regional sub-structures, namely:
Fairtrade Africa  -Southern Africa Network (FTA-SAN),
Fairtrade Africa  -West Africa Network (FTA-WAN),
Fairtrade Africa  -Eastern Africa Network (FTA-EAN) and
Fairtrade Africa  -North Africa Network (FTA-NAN), with the Africa regional secretariat based in Nairobi Kenya.

FTA currently works with over half a million (0.5million) smallholders and workers in 26 countries across Africa. These producers and workers are organised into cooperatives, associations and plantations totalling over 280.

All applications should consist of curriculum vitae, letter of motivation (including elaboration of qualifications as indicated in the table above) and letter of support from a Fairtrade producer organisation should be sent to the Executive Director Michael Nkonu (m.nkonu@fairtradeafrica.net). Deadline for candidatures is 30th October 2011

The Governance Committee will assess and shortlist candidates for an interview to be conducted after informing all candidates. Successful candidates will be approved by the Board at its next sitting after the interviews. Appointment is initially for a two-year period starting immediately after the appointment
