Fairtrade Label South Africa

Fairtrade Label SA is the South African FLO Label organisation. It is a non-profit organisation established in 2008 and based in Cape Town. The aim of Fairtrade Label SA is to introduce and promote the international Label in South Africa. What is unique about buying products with the FLO Label is that consumers contribute directly towards social development of producers and farm workers. They receive a social premium linked to the sales which is dedicated to social projects for the farming community. The communities themselves decided how this premium income is spent.

Fairtrade Label SA is an associate member of FLO. Currently FLO is undergoing a major strategic review that will lead to a new business model. The mandate of Fairtrade Label SA will be dependent on the outcome of this process.On 27 April 2009 Fairtrade Label SA signed an agreement with FLO regarding promoting and facilitating the trade in labelled products locally.

Since the end of 2008 the first South African companies use the Fairtrade label on their products. Labelled products available on the market include wine, coffee and rooibos tea. With the new agreement in place we wish to grow the number of products further as well as the availability for consumers.

At the recent FLSA AGM on 23 February 2010, 2 new directors were elected, and 1 director was re-elected. The board is now represented by 3 directors and 1 executive non-voting director:
