5. Eight Tips for sustainable holiday ENTERTAINING

Farmers markets are popping all over South Africa; by buying directly from a farmer or a local farmers market, you’ll have the first picks on what’s trending at the time.  Think fresh, local produce and supporting local economies.

Forget French and Italian varietals; cut carbon emissions by enjoying a bottle of locally produced, excellent quality, value for money Fairtrade offering from the heart of South Africa’s very own wine route (and also the largest producer of Fairtrade wine in the world!).

Throughout Nov you can enjoy a delicious pizza (dreamt up by Ivor Jones, head chef at SA's top restaurant, the Test Kitchen's) paired with a glass of Place in the Sun Fairtrade wine in Col Cacchio's restaurants nationwide.

Skip the festive season queues, mayhem and traffic by opting to have your fav bottle of Fairtrade delivered to your door. Keep an eye on CyberCellar (Nov/Dec), Winefolk and GetWine (Jan '16) for limited Fairtrade mixed case offers and Fairtrade savings this silly season.

Host a potluck and ask attendees to cook one of these recipes containing local, sustainable & ethically sourced ingredients. Be sure to check the recommended Fairtrade vino next to each dish to create your own pairing experience!

Make the characters come alive by sharing your favourite bottle of Fairtrade wine at a book club social (and stand in line to win this evening from Fish Hoek Wines!)

Recycle or reuse your empty Fairtrade wine bottles and spekbooms for table talkers and dinner table centrepieces. See this outside DIY torch for a fun family DIY project PLUS it’s great for keeping the mozzies away and saves electricity!

Dinner Party or wedding favours got you stressed? Chill and give a delicious bottle Fairtrade wine (or chocolate) - the gift that keeps giving.

6. Six things we bet you did not know about Fairtrade Wine

  1. Fairtrade Wine pouring into glasses
Fairtrade vinos combine quality and sustainability. Scooping up a host of local & international awards, these wines are among the best around any town.
  2. These award-winners offer excellent value for money, with an average bottle of Fairtrade vino retailing for around R46.
  3. Fairtrade is the choice of champions – the fresh & fruity Kleine Rust Fairtrade white is the official wine at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The same farm also produced the official wine for the 2012 London Olympics.
  4. Fairtrade wines are no newbie to the international scene – they are available at high-end wine stores and renowned retailers like Marks & Spencers, The Co-operative and Sainsbury's.
  5. Local availability soars as retailers like Pick n Pay, Checkers, Tops Spar, and even online wine stores like Cybercellar & Winefolk, all commit to stocking Fairtrade wines.
  6. If it’s a full experience you’re after, Fairtrade wines are produced on some of the most opulent and historic farms in the world. Think Paarl’s darling, Fairview; Bosman Family Vineyards, the jewel of Wellington and Stellenrust, the princess of Stellenbosch. Make it your mission to go visit a beautiful Fairtrade farm this summer!
