First Fairtrade Oké oranges on their way to Europe
On the 11th of May the first box Oké oranges was handed over by John Boyes from Zebediela citrus farm in South-Africa to Martijn van Es of AgroFair. Representatives from the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Department of Agriculture of Limpopo province, speeched about their trust in Fairtrade for the future of Zebediela.
AgroFair introduced in 1996 the first Fairtrade Oké bananas in Europe. After this successful launch the first Fairtrade pineapples and mangoes followed in 2002. This year the Oké fruit basket will be more complete with oranges. For these oranges, which are produced according the Fairtrade standards, producers from South-Africa and Argentina receive a fair price and a Fairtrade premium which can be used to realise social and environmental projects. The Fairtrade Foundation™s response to final communiqué of the G8 Today, G8
leaders at Gleneagles formally acknowledged the growing success of the global
fair trade movement in their final communiqué, by saying they will welcome the
growing market for fair trade goods and their positive effect in supporting
livelihoods and increasing public awareness of the positive role of trade in
